When I first read about the Pope's visit to South America, and the remarks that he made, I did a lot of eyeball rolling and raising of eyebrows. The comment that the indigenous people were asking to be converted is absurd. Of course the mission was to impose their culture onto the native population. It was just a continuation of previous centuries of 'convert or die', the method by which the church was able to grow. There's a definite correlation with the extremist Islamist regimes in current times, where there is no tolerance for anybody who believes differently from the fundamentalists. (113)
